Meaning of the śloka

The historical method selects an intact deceased person, not affected by poison or prolonged disease and under one hundred years of age, whose intestines and feces have been removed. The body is tied in a cage, wrapped in munja, bark, kusha, hemp, or similar material, and placed in a flowing river at a concealed location to decompose. After seven nights it is removed and gently rubbed with a brush made from usira, hair, bamboo, balvaja, or similar material so that all external and internal structures, beginning with the skin, can be observed directly.

Meaning of the commentary

The commentary explains the selection and handling criteria. An incomplete body would not confirm the textual counts; poison could destroy the skin and other tissues; prolonged disease could alter their measurements; inadequate wrapping could allow fish and other creatures to consume parts; absence of a cage could let the current carry the body away; and an exposed location could allow vultures and other animals to consume it.
